The secondary air injection is usually a requirement to all the cars. As a component of the car exhaust system, the secondary air injection system works by cleaning the exhaust gases so that they do not degrade the environment. The engines that are used by the vehicles do not run at 100% efficiency despite the continued innovations especially in the field of automotive industry. This means that there exist some portion of the fuel used by the locomotive which will not be burnt. The unburnt fuel indicate that the fuel was not fully converted to the power that is needed to run the engine during combustion. Another way of viewing the unburnt fuel is hydrocarbons which have not gone through combustion process. The unburned hydro carbons are then churned with other exhaust gases and then released to the environment together. Common causes which leads to cases of unburned fuel may be the variations on the quality of fuel, mechanical imperfections of the engine components and the driving conditions. The cleaning of the hydrocarbons therefore is one of the major functions of the secondary air injection system. The system usually works by intercepting and burning such fuels which may not be burnt.
As with any other parts that makes up a locomotive, the secondary air injection system is also subject to malfunctioning. The full replacement of the secondary air injection system may sometimes be necessary as a result of malfunction. The secondary air injection system may also be repaired especially in the cases where the situation is not heavy. There numerous factors which may necessitate the repairing of the secondary air injection system. The blown air pumps which may be as a result of freezing, the collection and the accumulation of the water in the air pump, defective air pump and the faulty valves to the air pumps are some of the common causes necessitating the secondary air injection system repair. The defective vacuum lines or the air control solenoids may also lead repairing of the system. Figuring out whether the secondary air injection system needs to be repaired may be difficult. However, there are common symptoms that may give one insight so as to consider checking the system for repair. Some of these symptoms may include the cases where the engines lights are on. This is usually an indication of a malfunction of the engine components. The hesitation of the engine during accelerations may also be another symptom indicating that the secondary air injection needs a repair.
